Technology

How Sublimation Printing Works

Sublimation is different from printing on top — the ink becomes part of the material itself, which is why it never peels, cracks, or fades.

The Process

Heat + Pressure = Permanent

Sublimation dye is printed onto transfer paper, then bonded to the substrate using high heat and pressure. The dye converts to gas and bonds with polymer molecules in the material.

  • Colour is embedded into the surface, not on top
  • Won't peel, crack, or wash off
  • Full-colour gradients and photos possible
  • Wrap-around 360° prints on cylinders
  • No raised texture — smooth, integrated finish

FAQ

Common Questions About Sublimation Printing in Calgary

Can you sublimate on dark-coloured items?

Sublimation works best on white or very light-coloured substrates. On dark items, the colours won't show up correctly. If you have a dark item in mind, UV printing may be a better option — ask us and we'll recommend the right service.

Is sublimation the same as heat transfer vinyl (HTV)?

No — sublimation fuses dye directly into the material, while HTV presses a vinyl layer on top. Sublimation is more durable, doesn't peel, and produces smoother full-colour results. HTV is better for dark fabrics.

Will the print fade after washing?

No. Because the dye is bonded into the material rather than applied on top, sublimation prints are highly resistant to fading, cracking, and washing — even after repeated use.

Can I bring my own mug or item to sublimate?

Yes, as long as it's a compatible sublimation-coated substrate. Reach out first and we'll confirm if your item will work before you bring it in.

How long does sublimation printing take?

Most single items can be ready within 1–2 business days. Bulk orders may take longer. We'll give you an accurate timeline with your quote.

Where are you located in Calgary?

We're based in Mackenzie Towne in southeast Calgary. Pick-up is available — contact us and we'll sort out the details.
